what to expect the day of surgery

No food after midnight:  It is imperative that you bring your pet into our clinic, fasted; this means no food after midnight and very limited amounts of water (if any) prior to your arrival.  If your pet does consume food or water, please let us know how much and when.  We may need to reschedule your pet’s surgical procedure for their safety. The consumption of food or water prior to anesthesia may cause your pet to vomit under anesthesia and choke or breathe in (aspirate) this material.

Morning Check-In/Admission:  Please arrive at our clinic with your pet at 8am the morning of surgery. If you get stuck in traffic please call us.  Depending on the procedure, we may have to reschedule.  The check-in/admissions process will take approximately 15 minutes.  During this time, one of our veterinary assistants/technicians will review the paperwork, explain the surgical procedure and estimates, provide you with a “Go Home”/Discharge time (usually between 3 and 5pm), and answer any questions you may have before you leave.  

Surgical Monitoring:

Each hospitalized patient will have a dedicated team that cares for them during their time with us. Our team will ensure that your pet’s surgery is performed with the utmost care, safety and expertise possible.  During anesthesia, your pet will receive intravenous fluids, vital monitoring, and a complimentary toe nail trim.  Your pet will be cared for as if he or she was one of ours.

Go Home/Discharge:

When you arrive at your scheduled “Go Home”/Discharge time, we will have one of our veterinary assistants/technicians meet with you.  Please plan on being at the clinic for approximately 20 minutes for your discharge appointment.  The veterinary assistant/technician will have very detailed discharge instructions to go over with you that are specific to your pet’s needs. They will also go over all the procedures we performed on your pet, discuss any return visits that are needed, and any medications that we are sending home. They can answer all of your questions at this time.  They will have you cash out with the front office and then reunite you with your pet!
